Contesting Brexit Masculinities: Pro‐European Activists and Feminist EU Citizenship*

Abstract Although Brexit campaigns mobilized discourses of hegemonic masculinity that marginalize women, women seemed to be at the forefront pro‐EU post‐referendum. I explore what extent activists make claims EU citizenship contest masculinities Brexit. Combining Isin's approach as ‘performed subject positions’ with intersectional feminist theory, argue became a site contestation, which nevertheless reproduced racialized and class‐based exclusions. Drawing on interviews grassroots activists, reject militaristic British identity by asserting multiple embodied identities, demand rights relating intimate sphere, participate in informal, local non‐hierarchical ways. Yet, they reveal white cultural European identity, exceptionalism demands for rights, failure break whiteness traditional social movements. These findings demonstrate need analysis within public opinion research.
